Did you know?

  • Zillertal is home to the only year-round ski area in Austria, the Hintertuxer Glacier.
  • Austria’s steepest run, Harakiri, can be found in Mayrhofen on the mountain of Penken. The track has a gradient of 78%. It’s only recommended for skiers who can comfortably tackle the aptly named Devil’s Run in Mayrhofen first!

Skiing in Zillertal

Zillertal is one of the biggest ski valleys in Austria. Located in Tyrol in the Zillertal Alps, the region is made up of four main ski areas, one of which can be skied at any time of the year, and includes the destinations of Fugen-Kaltenbach, Zell-Gerlos, Mayrhofen-Hippach and Tux-Finkenberg.

First Zillertaler

The First Zillertaler ski area is made up of the sub-areas of Hochzillertal-Hochfuegen with 88 km of slopes and Spieljoch in Fugen with 11 km of piste. There are 46 lifts covering the ski area and it offers slopes to thrill everyone, from families and beginners through to expert skiers and snowboarders. Super keen skiers can catch lifts to the slopes from as early as 07:30.

The Betterpark Hochzillertal snow park in Kaltenbach is at an altitude of 2,050 m to 2,120 m and has an area of 75,000 sq m. There are 17 elements and 14 jumps, including a superpipe, lines for beginners to pros, a jib line and a chill area.

Zillertal Arena

This is the biggest ski area in Zillertal with an impressive 139 km of slopes and 51 lifts. It’s technically possible to ski or snowboard from Tyrol to Salzburg using the pistes in the Zillertal Arena. The area stretches from Zell im Zillertal via Gerlos to Wald-Königsleiten and Krimml-Hochkrimml.

The area consists of 33 km of blue runs, 99 km red and 7 km black, as well as an amazing 200 km of cross-country ski trails. A snow park and halfpipe can be found in Gerlos, while Zell has the Action-Park Kreuzwiese and Hochkrimml is home to a fun park. A particular highlight is the longest toboggan run in Zillertal at a length of 7 km.

Mayrhofen

Mayrhofen’s slopes are spread across two mountains: Penken and Ahorn. It might be surprising to find that, despite the relatively low altitude of the village, most of the slopes are above the treeline.

  • Penken is the primary ski area and is accessible via a gondola from the town. It has a good number of red and black runs (including the famously steep Harakiri) and is also home to the excellent Penken Park for snowboarders and freeskiers. Its pro area is a top draw for experts, and events are held in the park every winter. Highlights include the Rainbow Box, the Wallride at the foot of the park and the sizeable Beastbox multi-jib.

It’s worth bearing in mind that there are other slopes to take advantage of both close by (especially at Finkenberg and Lanersbach) and in the wider Zillertal valley, with the Zillertal Super Ski Pass enabling access to 650 km of runs across an amazing 82 ski areas in total. This includes skiing on the Hintertux glacier.

Ski and Glacier World Zillertal 3000

Ski and Glacier World Zillertal 3000 has around 135 km of slopes split across the Hintertux glacier, Eggalm, Finkenberger Almbahnen and Rastkogelbahnen. The glacier offers skiing throughout the year, with 18 km of piste available in the summer, and also has two comprehensive snow parks.
