Skiing in Val di Fassa
Val di Fassa is the place to go if you need as much choice as possible when it comes to ski runs to tackle. The region has more than enough slopes for one ski holiday all by itself (including those at the group of resorts known as Trevalli and 50 km of cross-country trails), and there’s over 1,000 km more downhill pistes in the wider Dolomiti Superski area.
Skiers can choose from several distinct ski areas in Val di Fassa. Alpe di Lusia is the ski area attached to Moena and Soraga and makes up part of Trevalli along with Falcade, offering 25 km of skiing on its own. Falcade, which includes the San Pellegrino Pass, adds another 75 km to this to create a formidable ski region.
The Belvedere ski area has a total of 40 km of slopes that can be separated into four sub-areas: Col Rodella, Sella Pass (from which you can ski the Sella Ronda), Canazei-Belvedere and Canazei-Pordoi Pass. Canazei-Belvedere makes up the bulk of the runs here and is also home to the oldest ski school in Italy.
Carezza has another 40 km of runs and can be found between Trentino and Alto Adige. It is particularly ideal for families and boasts 16 lifts and 170 artificial snow cannons. The area stretching from the Costalunga Pass to Nova Levante is south-facing and therefore catches the best of the sunshine during the day.
The Vigo di Fassa-Catinaccio ski area offers 17 km of slopes and a natural terrace at 2,000 m that affords amazing 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks for an unforgettable sight. Expert skiers will want to tackle the black Tomba run, which is nearly 2 km long, although there are slopes for all abilities in the area.
With 33 km of runs in total, the Ciampac-Buffaure ski area boasts the 2.5 km Ciampac black run, which descends 660 m to the village for an exhilarating drop. There’s also the only cross-country circuit at 2,000 m out of all of the trails in the entire valley and slopes that are used by professional skiers for event training.
The Fedaia-Pian dei Fiacconi ski area is accessible from Canazei and offers skiing on the Marmolada glacier between February and May.
