The Stubai Glacier recently opened an Ice Grotto at nearly 3,000 m. The grotto is 150 m long and lets visitors explore the ‘interior’ of the glacier and see the ice close up.

Skiing in Stubai
Stubai is a highly-regarded resort located in the Stubai Valley, which extends for over 35 km into the Stubai Alps. It boasts runs for all abilities, with the highlight being the chance to ski on the famous Stubai Glacier.
Stubai comprises five main villages: Neustift, Fulpmes, Telfes, Mieders and Schönberg. All of these are at altitudes of at least 1,000 m. The skiing here can be separated into four areas: the Stubai Glacier, Schlick 2000, Elferlifte and Serlesbahnen.
The Stubai Glacier has a wide variety of runs - 110 km in total - between altitudes of 2,300 m and 3,200 m. Most of these are blue and red, although there are also some great off-piste areas for those seeking a challenge. The most famous run is the 10 km Wilde Grub’n valley run.
If you’re new to skiing or relatively inexperienced, the so-called Comfort Piste on Daunferner is a good place to ski, as is the Schaufelspitz interconnected ski area, which also has some red runs. More expert skiers may want to try the black Daunhill piste, which has a gradient of 60%.
Off-piste skiing is also available for very experienced skiers, with the possible routes mapped by GPS. For snowboarders and freeriders, the Stubai Zoo snow park is sure to appeal with features for all skill levels. The park is a meeting place for some of Tyrol’s top snowboarders and freeride skiers.
Schlick 2000 has 22 km of runs and can be found high above Fulpmes. It’s home to the longest valley downhill run (3 km) and a fantastic observation deck at 2,160 m, which is worth visiting for the panoramic views.
Elferlifte is directly accessible from Neustift and has 3 km of mostly red runs. It’s notable for the 8 m wide wooden sundial that skies can get to straight from the Elfterlifte lifts. It also has the longest natural toboggan run in the area.
Serlesbahnen in Mieders has 6 runs measuring almost 6 km and is ideal for families, as the majority of the runs are blue and red and the overall area is fairly compact.
In addition to the above, there are 62 km of cross-country skiing trails to explore, including an illuminated trail in Milders for night-time skiing.
