Skiing in Kronplatz
The first thing you need to know is that Kronplatz (also referred to as Plan de Corones) is both the name of the mountain/ski resort and the wider region, which mainly consists of the Puster Valley. The Kronplatz region contains three ski resorts: Kronplatz, Speikboden and Klausberg.
Kronplatz is the most famous of the three and boasts amazingly well-groomed slopes (they’re so good that two manufacturers of snow grooming equipment use images of Kronplatz in their advertising!) and a nice variety of skiing experiences, including both alpine and cross-country skiing. The resort has a circular shape not unlike a ring cake (and, indeed, the interior is often nicknamed the Panettone), which makes it easy to navigate.
Skiers can enjoy 116 km of slopes and 31 lifts, with plenty of long runs and lots of winter sunshine on offer. Kronplatz is one of a handful of resorts in the Alps to offer five black-graded slopes, which are only for the very skilled to try. Overall, the resort isn’t as busy as you might expect, so skiers can go about their business in relative peace and quiet.
An excellent transportation system with a modern railway at its heart lets skiers try slopes all over the Kronplatz region, as well as the wider Dolomiti Superski area - which has the biggest network of cross-country ski trails in Europe totalling 1,300 km - so there are plenty of skiing options for everyone.
Other activities in Kronplatz
Kronplatz offers all the winter activities you might expect from your typical ski resort. Tobogganing is a popular pursuit, and there are several dedicated tracks.
Other activities to try include guided snowshoeing tours that let you fully appreciate the beautiful mountain scenery in the Puster Valley and beyond, as well as ice skating. Kronplatz has an abundance of natural outdoor and artificial indoor skating rinks to enjoy, and curling is also on offer at some venues.
If you want your feet to leave the ground (and not to fall over!) then Kronplatz’s tandem paragliding activity might be just the thing for you. You can either paraglide on your own if you have a licence, or pair up with an instructor who will guide you on a breathtaking journey over the Kronplatz region. You’ll even receive photos and a video to remember your adventure by afterwards.
Entertainment in Kronplatz
There are a few excellent restaurants you can try in Kronplatz itself, although you may need to venture further afield if you prefer to spend your evenings in a bar or somewhere equally lively. There are several public baths with natural springs that you can visit by day around the Puster Valley if you need to recuperate from the previous evening’s activities.
Brunico-Bruneck is the best place to head to for a spot of shopping, while there’s also plenty of attractions to take in around the wider region on a day of sightseeing. These range from folk and mining museums to churches, castles and the famous Concordia 2000 bell, which weighs 16 tonnes and tolls once a day.
