Skiing in Val Gardena

Val Gardena may officially be in Italy now, but it used to be Austrian and retains a certain cosmopolitan air as a result - especially as German is still widely spoken here. The area has three major ski resorts, each of which offer a slightly different ski holiday experience.

Selva Gardena is the most popular of the three and is a charming village in a stunning setting - you’ll be amazed at the mountain views from pretty much wherever you stay and ski! Selva is convenient for access to the famous Sella Ronda ski circuit, which is made up of 40 km of easy-to-navigate slopes that let you enjoy the scenery to your heart’s content.

The skiing is Selva consists of wooded slopes at the lower end and more open pistes further up the mountain. Skiers can take the Dantercëpies gondola for skiing the Sella Ronda and trying red runs back to the village. The Ciampinoi gondola travelling south offers access to shaded pistes on the way back to the village, via Plan de Gralba. There is also access to the resorts of Canazei, Campitello di Fassa and Alta Badia.

Santa Cristina is pretty much right next to Selva and again boasts beautiful surroundings for your ski holiday. There are three areas to try here - two to the south and one to the north. Nordic skiing enthusiasts will want to head to Monte Pana to try its two ski jumps and 30 km of cross-country ski trails.

The Saslong lift offers access to world championship-level pistes, as well as the aforementioned Sella Ronda, making this a great place to stay for expert skiers. The Ciampinoi area is also accessible via the Saslong gondola. There are black and red versions of the Saslong to cater for a variety of abilities. There are further connections to Col Raiser and Seceda.

Ortisei is Val Gardena’s main town and provides access to two distinct ski areas: the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) and the Val Furnes, which take skiers up to Santa Cristina.

The Seiser Alm, which has 27 lifts, offers a blue run to the Al Sole and Mezdí chairlifts, from where more runs can be found for confident beginners. These runs are generally wide and not too steep.

There’s also a red run down to the start of the Sanon chairlift and another red from the lift to the Steger Dellai chairlift. You can then go back down under the lift route or take one of two alternative routes. The Euro and Bullacia lifts offer access to some good intermediate runs. Lifts and red runs offer a way back to Ortisei from the Seiser Alm. Seceda is another key ski run in Ortisei.

There are also over 133 km of cross-country trails to take advantage of across Val Gardena, including Palu Grande in Seiser Alm, many of which are at a high enough altitude to afford some particularly spectacular views of the valley.

The snowboarding in Val Gardena is particularly good for beginners and freeriders. The Piz Sella terrain park is close to Selva, while the King Laurin Snowpark in Seiser Alm is particularly large at 1.5 km long.
