Skiing in Jungfrau Region

Three ski areas and just one ski pass! The Jungfrau Region is situated in the eastern Bernese Oberland, south of Interlaken. The region is nestled in the most beautiful alpine scenery in the world, dominated by the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, whose beauty attracts tourists from all over the world.

Grindelwald is a pretty ski village set against the magnificent mountain backdrop of Jungfrau and Eiger. The largest ski resort in the Jungfrau region, Grindelwald boasts extensive piste skiing with 213 km of runs spread across three ski areas: First, Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen and Mürren-Schilthorn.

First has more than 60 km of pistes that are accessible via a gondola from Grindelwald’s eastern side, including a slow slope especially for learners. The steepest piste here has a gradient of 58%.

Other highlights of Grindelwald-First include a 15 km sledding trail from Faulhorn to Grindelwald, a ski cross course, the White Elements Snowpark with lots of lines, kickers and more over a 650 m run, and the First Flyer cable riding feature that sends harnessed passengers downhill from 50 m high at high speeds.

Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen is set at the base of the Eiger and has 110 km of slopes to enjoy. Highlights include the 4.2 km Lauberhorn Race Course, which skiers can use outside of World Cup season, as well as its steepest piste with a 71% gradient. The longest chairlift in Kleine Scheidegg, Läger, runs for 2,079 m. There is also a ski movie piste where you can make your own ski video and a speed checkpoint at the Arven lift.

The Mürren-Schilthorn ski area is the highest in the Bernese Oberland with an altitude of between 1,650 m and 3,000 m. The area’s height means skiers can take advantage of particularly good snow conditions throughout the ski season. There are 54 km of slopes here, including a 75% gradient piste. The Mürren area might be small but the pistes are incredibly varied.

The Inferno Race, which has been going since 1928, is held in Mürren-Schilthorn and is now the biggest amateur ski race in the world. The Skyline snowpark is another highlight of the ski area.

The car-free village of Wengen, at the base of the Jungfrau, is located on a sunny plateau and offers breath-taking views of the mountains. Wengen is close by and offers more piste options for skiers who quickly get through the slopes in the immediate vicinity. This is a charming village, and the runs are perhaps best suited to those with no or a little experience rather than experts.

Cross-country skiing enthusiasts can explore 30 km of trails across Grindelwald and nearby Lauterbrunnen. The track between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg allows skiers to compete against others and compare times online.
