Skiing in Engadin-St Moritz

Engadin-St Moritz is an attractive ski region in eastern Switzerland that’s now a byword for glamorous ski holidays thanks to the celebrities who have graced St Moritz with their presence over the years.

There’s more to the area than its A-list guests, however. Engadin-St Moritz offers lots of sunshine, high-altitude skiing - meaning excellent snow - and a frozen lake that provides a variety of ice-based activities.

St Moritz is divided into 4 villages: Dorf, Celerina and St Moritz Bad. Dorf and Celerina are the main hotspots for the rich and famous, while St Moritz Bad offers a quieter experience for skiers.

The skiing is split across 4 main areas - Corviglia, Corvatsch, Diavolezza/Lagalb and Zuoz - and 6 more smaller ones which are relatively uncrowded compared with their bigger counterparts.

Corviglia offers 100 km of World Cup-standard runs, amazing views from Piz Nair at 3,057 m and one of the best snowparks in Europe. It’s a good idea to get up early enough to catch the first lift at 07:45 for uncrowded pistes and the amazing sunrise.

Corvatsch is the highest mountaintop station in the Eastern Alps at an altitude of 3,303 m and has 120 km of pistes. It also boasts the longest illuminated piste in Switzerland for night-time skiing, with a length of 4.2 km.

Diavolezza/Lagalb is an impressive part of the ski region high up in the peaks of the Bernina Massif. Skiers can enjoy some truly fantastic views here as they follow the 10 km glacier run from the Diavolezza via the Munt Pers to Morteratsch.

Zuoz is a small, scenic village with a family ski area containing around 15 km of pistes, mainly blue runs. The area has 2 chairlifts, 3 ski lifts and a children’s ski school. The Sur En cross-country ski centre can also be found here.

The smaller ski areas include Languard in Pontresina, Cristins in Silvaplana, Proluvèr in Celerina, Müsella in La Punt, Survih in Samedan, Aela in Maloja and Bügls in S-chanf. Other notable features of the Engadin-St Moritz region include the Cresta Run, a natural ice toboggan run that was the first one in the world when it was created in 1885. The best snowboarding can be found in Corvatsch and Diavolezza for some excellent freeriding.

Away from the snow and ice of the region, Engadin-St Moritz offers plenty in the way of gourmet dining, shopping and spas for lots of relaxation.
